What  is the Micah Challenge

·         It is a global Christian Coalition campaign that is raising a prophetic and powerful voice with the poor.

·         It is facilitated jointly by the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) and the Micah Network. (WEA is a coalition of World Evangelicals and Micah Network is a coalition of Christians, trade unions and aid agencies who compaign for the alleviation of poverty)  NB: Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ) is the representative of Evangelicals in Zimbabwe.

Aims

·         To deepen Christian engagement with impoverished and marginalized communities

·         To challenge international leaders and leaders of rich and poor countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and so halve absolute global poverty by 2015.

Micah Call

·         It is a call for and by world leaders to biblically commit themselves as followers of Jesus to work together for the holistic transformation of our communities to pursue justice, be passionate about kindness and to walk humbly with God.

·         The call also extends to international and national decision leaders to fulfill their public promise to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and so halve absolute poverty by 2015.

Therefore we are  calling on Christians everywhere to be agents of hope for and with the poor and to work with others to hold our national and global leaders accountable in securing a more just and merciful World.

Why the Micah Challenge in Zimbabwe

·         The country experienced one of the highest inflation rates in the world and the mortality, debt and poverty levels are high. Also, the  country is politically in transition where as it is being ruled by a Government of National Unity

·         On the contrary, UNDP Report on Zimbabwe’s MDGs as of 2009 asserted that the country has one of the highest education enrolments of 91%, HIV prevalence of 11.6 in 2009 and prenatal care of as high as 90%. Moreover, the country has high mineral deposits and it also has good tourist attraction areas in the world. If the country has such advantages and it has made such improvements in other sectors, it is able to meet the MDGs by the year 2015.
